Day 5: Thank Goodness It’s Friday (And I’m Not Cooking)”

Sometimes things don’t always go according to plan. Like when you set out to do a food blog post every day in November and end up writing about not cooking. What does go according to plan? Our Friday night tradition.

When I was young, we looked forward to Friday because school was over for the week, my parents were done with work, and I was ready to spend some quality time with our friends from Full House, Step By Step and Family Matters. We would call the local sub shop order the special: 2 large pizzas, wings, and 2 bottles of soda. Once we finished eating, we would drive over to Friendly’s and my dad would get the Jim Dandy, my brother was a fan of the kids’ sundae with lots of hot fudge, and me and my mom enjoyed some fruity strawberry Fribbles.

Now the tradition has changed a bit. We now watch Dancing with the Stars and the company has changed. My brother and mom still join me on the couch, but now my husband is part of the Friday night fun too. Now, I wanted to up the ante and make everything from scratch (i.e. more difficult), but when it came time to cook, I changed my mind. This tradition was not about the food. It was about the people that are around me and making time for us to sit at the table and catch up from the week. Sometimes the best thing to make for dinner is a reservation. Or, in our case, a phone call to the sub shop.

Now, I do add a little extra to the evening. We all wear our fanciest pajamas. I add blinking twinkle lights to the living room walls and a discoball hangs from the ceiling fan. Once we call in the pizza and turn those sparkly lights on the weekend has officially begun.

TGIF! My oven will stay cold tonight, but I’ll see you in the kitchen tomorrow!
