We have some new life in the greenhouse! I was trying to decide what would be the safest veggies to plant throughout the coldest part of the year and went with peas and a few different types of lettuce. I was getting a bit discouraged when I kept checking and there were no baby seedlings poking through the soil….until the other day!
I noticed a bit of green and took a closer look to see multiple pea sprouts coming up and then some baby lettuce making their way into the world. I was excited, but worried that they would freeze once above the ground, so I put some cloth over the lettuce beds and hoped for the best. So far so good. I took some soil temps today and the covered bed was about ten degrees higher than the beds with the peas. I took the air temperature under the cloth and found that it kept it about 5 – 10 degrees warmer. I decided to cover them as well to keep some warmth in. We are running a space heater but the air inside the greenhouse is only at 40 F….the outside temp is -10 F with the wind chill so I’m happy with that for now.
I have one heated bed that is empty and am thinking of adding radishes (to hopefully go along with the lettuce in a nice winter salad) and fill up the other half of one of the beds with either some cabbage or brussel sprouts. My only hesitation with these two is they will take up a lot of room and I don’t want to overtax the soil since we will be using these throughout the spring and summer seasons as well. I’m going to take a look through my seed catalogs to get some inspirations. Hope you are all staying warm and enjoying the new year!
