I normally love this time of year but I have been struggling to get into the holiday spirit. I think it is just such a strange time and it doesn’t feel as festive without being able to see all of our friends and family. Some of our traditions won’t happen this year, including our annual cookie party with friends and our Christmas Eve get together with family. One thing we did stick to was making our cinnamon christmas ornaments! They are super easy and smell sooooo good! A word of caution – these are NOT EDIBLE. We add glue into the recipe to hold the shape of the cookies.

Here’s the recipe:
1 cup cinnamon
1 Tbsp cloves
1 tsp almond extract (I have also used anise and vanilla extract as well – use whatever you have!)
¾ cups unsweetened applesauce
2 Tbsp glue (I use wood glue but you could use white school glue too)
Mix in a bowl until you have a batter that comes together into a ball

Roll out dough to about ¼ – ½ inch and use cookie cutters to make your ornaments. Use a straw to make a hole in the top of the cutout so you can slip a string through once dried. You can tell by our cutouts that we are dog lovers and Disney fans!

Lay them on a cookie sheet and leave them to dry. This can take 4 – 5 days in a dry, airy spot. Once dried you can add the ribbon or string to complete the ornament.

I hope you enjoy making these with your family! It makes your home smell great and brings back great memories every time you see them on the tree. What are some Christmas traditions that you look forward to every year?
Jennifer,
It is such a different Christmas this year but you and Josh make it fun no matter what. You get used to new and old traditions. Can’t wait till these dry. Thank you for sharing this wonderful idea
